GUIDANCE
The guidance program seeks to give support to each student in knowing and accepting himself/herself as a worthwhile person and a contributing member of society. The counselors assist the students in identifying their abilities and interests through the interpretation of achievement and mental abilities tests and make recommendations for academic placement. Counselors also work with students on both an individual and a group basis to discuss issues and problems relative to children at the middle-school level. Students may make appointments or obtain permission from their teachers to visit the guidance office. Parents may arrange for conferences with the counselors by calling the school office at 638-6440.
INFORMATION REGARDING MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
If a student needs to take medicine while at school, he must take the medicine to the front office immediately upon arrival at school, in its original container, with a note from his parent. This includes aspirin, cough drops, etc., as well as all prescription drugs. A form must be completed by the parent and physician for all long term medications.
IMMUNIZATION CERTIFICATE
Georgia law requires students enrolled in a Georgia school to have a Certificate of Adequate Immunization. This form may be secured from the Walker County Health Department or at the child’s personal physician’s office.
SCHOOL DAY
Students should arrive no earlier than 7:00 a.m. and no later than 8:05 a.m. Neither rooms nor school buildings will be opened before 7:00 a.m. All students arriving prior to 7:40 will go to the Commons Area. At 7:40 students will be dismissed to report to homeroom. Students not involved in after school activities should be picked up within 15 minutes of the conclusion of the school day, which is 3:15.
ATTENDANCE
“The Walker County Board of Education considers regular school attendance to be essential for education progress. Students shall be in the Walker County Public Schools in accordance with the requirements of the compulsory attendance law and for the number of full-length days prescribed by law.” A record of attendance for each student enrolled in county schools shall be kept in the school attendance register in conformance with the regulations of the State Board of Education as printed in the attendance register. If a student is absent from school, he needs to bring a note to his homeroom teacher from his parent stating the reason he was out.
Students may be temporarily excused from school as follows:
1. Personally ill or when attendance in school would endanger their health or the health of others.
2. A serious illness or death in their immediate family necessitates absence from school.
Any absence greater than three days requires the approval of the principal to be considered “excused”.
3. Mandated by order of governmental agencies, including pre-induction physical examinations for service in the
armed forces or by court order.
4. Celebrating religious holidays observed by the student’s faith.
5. Conditions rendering attendance impossible or hazardous to their health and safety.

MAKE-UP WORK
It is the student’s responsibility to make up any work missed in class due to an absence. In the event that a middle school student is absent from school, the student’s grades shall not be penalized for excused absences provided the following conditions are met:
(1) upon return to school, the student contacts his teachers to schedule the make-up work, and
(2) the make-up work is completed within five school days of the student’s return to school, and *
(3) make-up work for absences is completed satisfactorily.
(4) Make-up work, satisfactorily completed, following the first short-term out-of-school suspension per semester shall be used in calculating the overall average for the grading period. Make-up work for other suspension days shall not be used.
Whenever excused absences are anticipated, make-up work should be assigned prior to the absence. LaFayette Middle School asks that a written request for a pre-arranged absence is submitted to the Principal at least three school days in advance.
*The school Principal may extend the completion date commensurate with the student’s work load provided the student has made significant progress in completing the make-up work.

Students are hereby notified that Walker County School System does not discriminate on the basis of gender in its athletic programs. The sports equity coordinator for this school system is: Mr. Craig Davoulas, P. O. Box 29, LaFayette, Georgia 30728, Phone number 638-7954. SECTION III - STUDENT CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE
It is the purpose of the Walker County Board of Education to operate schools in a manner that will provide an orderly process of education and that will ensure the safety of all students who attend the schools within the district. The Board believes that in order for classrooms to be satisfactory learning environments the conduct of students must be wholesome, orderly and respectful of authority. Students shall behave themselves and other students, respect each other and school district employees, and obey student behaviors policies established by the Board and by each school. In addition, students are expected to attend class regularly, be prepared for class, demonstrate courtesy toward others, dress appropriately, cooperate with school officials, respect other’s property, avoid violation of the student code of conduct and practice the traits taught in the character education curriculum (Board Policy IDAG).
The primary goal of schools is to educate students, not to punish them. When a student violates the rules of this behavior code, corrective action may be necessary in order for the student and the school as a whole to benefit. The principal is the designated leader of the school and, in concert with the school staff, is responsible for the rules of this behavior code and may undertake corrective measures which she/he believes to be in the best interest of the student and the school. Additionally, the principal may discipline students for conduct off campus which is felonious or which may pose a threat to the school’s learning environment or the safety of students and employees.
Walker County Board of Education policy code JCDA establishes the guidelines for school personnel to discipline students. In addition to this policy, LaFayette Middle School has established school specific guidelines and policies for our students also.
DRUG FREE POLICY
1. Possessing or using any quantities of intoxicants, illegal drugs, controlled substances, counterfeit controlled substances, or unmarked nonprescription drugs is prohibited.
2. Selling or distributing any quantities of intoxicants, illegal drugs, controlled substances, counterfeit controlled substances, or unmarked nonprescription drugs is prohibited.
WEAPONS
It is unlawful for any person to carry, possess or have under control any weapon at a school building, school function or on school property or on a bus or other transportation furnished by the school.
The term “weapon” means and includes any pistol, revolver, or any weapon designed or intended to propel a missile of any kind, or any dirk, bowie knife, switchblade knife, ballistic knife, any other knife having a blade, spring stick, metal knucks, blackjack, or any flailing instrument consisting of two or more rigid parts connected in such a way to allow them to swing freely, which may be known as a nun chuck, or fighting chain, throwing star or oriental dart, or any weapon of like kind, any stun gun or taser; or anything that looks like one of the above weapons, whether it is a toy or real, but inoperable.
Violation may result in expulsion from school for one year and/or criminal prosecution. (O.C.G.A.§16-11-127.1; 15-11-37; P.L. 103-227) (Walker Board of Education Policy JCDAE)
A student shall not possess, handle, or transmit a razor, razor blade, ice pick, explosive loaded cane, sword cane, machete, pistol, rifle, shotgun, pellet gun, and other guns of any kind, knives of any kind, any object that reasonably can be considered a weapon, any look-alike objects displayed as a weapon, or any weapon identified in Policy JCDAE: a) on the school grounds at any time; b) off the school grounds at a school activity, function or event; or c) enroute to and from school. (Walker County Board of Education Policy JCDA - Rule 7)
BULLYING
A student shall not engage in any willful attempt or threat to inflict injury on another person, when accompanied by an apparent present ability to do so, or in any intentional display of force such as would give the victim reason to fear or expect immediate bodily harm.
Student in grades 6 through 12 who have violated this rule for the third time in a school year shall be assigned to the Alternative Education Center by the principal or designee. (Walker Count Board of Education Policy JCDA - Rule 14)
ASSEMBLIES AND SCHOOL-SPONSORED EVENTS
• Any school-sponsored event, including dances, movies, club meetings, etc. is considered to be a learning activity. Behavior at these events should follow the same pattern as that for the classroom with exceptions granted for conduct which is acceptable for particular events. Boisterous and unruly behavior is absolutely prohibited and will result in ejection from that particular activity and possible expulsion from participation in further activities.
• During sporting events, the students should support the school teams vigorously, yet respect the presence of the opposition. Booing, hissing, and other unsportsmanlike conduct are prohibited. Proper student behavior at sporting events will assure future enjoyment of these affairs.
• All activities held after school hours have a definite beginning and ending time. Unless other arrangements have been made beforehand with the school, students are responsible for their own transportation and will be expected to arrive and leave school grounds within the announced time frame of the activity. Students not adhering to this face possible disciplinary action.
FIGHT POLICY
No student has the right to assault another student, for any reason. Students will be deemed to be fighting if they are actively engaged in physical combat with other student(s) or if they intentionally strike a person with the purpose of causing harm or injury. Students who are clearly attacked without immediate provocation and who do not engage in offensive combat in return will not be charged with fighting. A student who is attacked may use reasonable force in self-defense, but only to free themselves from the attack and notify proper school authorities. Fighting in self-defense will be an unacceptable excuse. It is the responsibility of the school administrators to determine the degree of involvement of each person involved in a fight. Students who engage in such misconduct may be charged by the police.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Academic dishonesty / cheating will not be tolerated at LaFayette Middle School. Students participating in such will not receive credit for work and are subject to school discipline.
DETENTION
Detention may be assigned by the teacher or school officials.
A 24-hour notice will be given to allow parents to make arrangements for transportation. Students may be picked up at the front entrance at 4:00 p.m.
Students are expected to bring some type of school-related academic work with them to detention. Talking, sleeping, failure to follow instructions, tardiness, etc. will result in additional disciplinary measures being taken.
Students that have an excused absence for the day of detention will be reassigned detention one time.
Failure to serve detention results in further disciplinary action (One day of ISS).
ISS / OSS
In-School Suspension (ISS) is designed to isolate students from their peers while allowing them to be at school doing their work. Once a student exceeds 10 days per semester of ISS assignment, further disciplinary action could result in Out of School suspension.
Out of School Suspension (OSS) is a disciplinary measure used to remove students from the school environment. Make up work, satisfactorily completed, following the first out of school suspensions shall be used in calculating grades. Make up work for any subsequent suspension days may not be used in calculating grades.
SCHOOL BUS CONDUCT
Riding the school bus is a privilege extended to students, and it can be removed at any time for disruptive or harmful acts and unsatisfactory conduct. All pupils being transported are under the authority of the bus driver and must obey his/her requests. Since the consequences of improper behavior on a school bus can be so much more severe than improper behavior in a classroom, students are asked and expected to conform even more closely to the established rules of the school. Each student will be expected to accept the responsibilities and follow the guidelines listed below. A “defensive school bus rider” is one who will do everything possible to prevent an accident by behaving and obeying all school bus safety rules.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT
A student shall not engage in deliberate, repeated, and unsolicited physical actions, gestures, or verbal or written comments of a sexual nature, when such conduct has the purpose or effect of interfering with a student’s academic performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive learning environment. Examples include behaviors such as leering, pinching, grabbing, suggestive comments or jokes, or pressure to engage in sexual activity.

A student’s dress and personal appearance should reflect dignity and pride in oneself and in the school. Toward this end students shall wear apparel which is appropriate for school and which will not interfere with the classroom or school operation. The following list provides students, parents and school personnel with an understanding of what apparel is and is not acceptable at school. Parents are encouraged to assist the school by monitoring their child’s clothing. The following list is not all inclusive. Each school administration has the right to evaluate a student’s clothing to determine whether an item might be substantially likely to interfere with the function of the school.
