mickrogers's Weblog

Created with Mac OS X Server

Well, the school year is winding down. Only two more Mondays. Our reading program is under way and I am encouraged to see that most students retained the bulk of instruction received during the first of the year. All students have reading homework assignments for the rest of this week. After visits to the library cease, we will need to find alternate reading sources: the public library is excellent, as are magazines, the Bible, etc. Please do not stop reading because we cannot go to the library any more. Let's all pull together as we head for the finish line.
Continue to be blessed,
Mick

Our first full week following the CRCT was excellent. We have resumed an aggressive reading program which should lead to substantial gains. The Star Reading test administered last week indicated that most students have indeed made significant progress already. Since we have four weeks left, we will continue in our quest to become the best reading class ever at LaFayette Academy! The goal will be a pizza party here for all students that read at least 25 books with a score of 70% or better on the Accelerated Reader test and a party at Cici's for those students that read at least 30 books. Yes, the meals and beverages will be provided for the students along with $5.00 in tokens for the game room. Parents and families are welcome of course, but I will not be able to cover the cost for anyone except those eligible students. Transportation will be the responsibility of the student and I invite all parents who are able, to chaperone and assist in "crowd control" (tee, hee). The last day for books to count will be 5/9/08 and the date/time will be announced next week, so please watch this blog for information. I will also use student Agendas to communicate the details. By the way, no one has ever emailed me concerning this blog. If you have feedback, I would love to hear from you. My email address is: mickrogers@walkerschools.org. Please let me hear from you. Until then...
Be Blessed,

We made it! I want everyone to know how proud I am of our students!! Our motto, "We're not scared, we have strategies," was right on target. As I monitored students taking the CRCT, they would look up, smile, and whisper, "I love strategies." Well, the strategies made everyone relax, but students' hard work in class made everything possible. While the scores won't be in until sometime in May, I have a good feeling about the results. For the most part, everyone was rested and relaxed. That makes for a great combination when taking tests. Thanks everyone for your assistance in making this possibly the best year yet for LMS. As for the rest of the year, we have five weeks of instruction left and we will be hitting the books. While the CRCT measured achievement to date, we have much work left to prepare for seventh grade. I want our students to be the best prepared yet. So, stay tuned for the rest of the story.
Thanks again,
Mick

CRCT has arrived! Our motto is, "We're not scared, we have strategies!" Yes, we do have strategies, but we have a year of hard work also. There has been enormous preparation for this week and we are ready. Please remember that so much hinges on students' performance on the CRCT. Also, despite the hard work and study, there are other factors that can have tremendous impact. Happy brains work best, so avoiding conflicts is imperative. If there's an issue that must be settled, consider waiting until next week to tackle it. Rest and nutrition will be paramount issues too. Students must get to bed at a reasonable hour. Breakfast is critical. The brain is a small organ compared to whole body mass, but it utilizes 1/4th of all water, oxygen, and calories consumed. Brain hydration (drinking adequate amounts of appropriate liquid - water, juice, etc) is essential to peak performance. Please, avoid those "energy" drinks. They will have an adverse impact on performance. And last, but most important, pray and love your child. No matter how the test results turn out, we will still love our children. Thanks to everyone who was involved in our incredible adventure.

Well, this is the last week before CRCT. As I reported last week, we have covered an enormous amount of material and have practiced multiple test taking techniques since last October. The students have for the most part enjoyed the exercises and are developing a great deal of confidence in their abilities. Please use this week to instill in your child the need to get to bed early and eat breakfast. Help them avoid conflicts because an "unsettled" mind does not function well. Happy brains work best! Thanks for all your effort and assistance. I know that we will celebrate the outcome.
Be Blessed,

Welcome back everyone. I hope the break brought rest and recreation. We have two weeks (ten instructional days) before the CRCT. We have worked very hard this year in preparation and I want our students to be confident and relaxed. We have learned the GPS content areas as well as multiple choice test taking strategies. I have seen only a few problems and those can be corrected in the time remaining. Please encourage your child to get to bed early and eat breakfast for the next weeks (I'm sure you are already doing this) so that the pattern will be set for the assessment. I want to thank everyone again for the wonderful job you are doing in supporting our efforts.
Be Blessed,
Mick

Can it be that Easter break is already upon us? With a short week, then the CRCT beginning April 14th, the year is absolutely flying by. We have accomplished many significant things this year. I am confident that our students have received the instruction needed to do well on the annual assessment. It is still crucial that each child receive adequate rest each night, eat a balanced breakfast each morning, and be in school every day! With the flu season still wreaking havoc, please remind your child to wash hands often and observe procedures that reduce chances of exposure to the "bug." We will overcome adversity when we give our best effort. Remember, this is a team effort and we want a "number one seed" in the CRCT Tournament! Go Ramblers!!!

Thanks to all parents that read this weblog and encourage their children to give their best effort! You are the best!!! There are only 18 days left until the CRCT. Please remember to read and sign the Homework Agenda daily. Let me know if there are any concerns or questions. Friday 3/14/08 is an In Service day and there will be no school for students. I hope you all will be able to take advantage of the long week-end to have some fun and relaxation. Everyone will need to be in tip top shape for the "push" to the CRCT. Thanks again for all you do!

For the week of 3/3/08:
I hope everyone had a restful and fulfilling weekend. The countdown to the CRCT continues with only 22 more instructional days. With only a few exceptions, there appears to be a lot of productivity. The "holes" are being filled in and students seem fairly excited about the test as opposed to being nervous or fearful. The main requirement is that everyone comes to class prepared (with completed homework, pencil, paper, signed Agenda, and a positive attitude). I wish all parents could witness those moments when the light comes on and a student "gets it." I don't know who rejoices more, the student or the teacher. I can tell you that it is an exciting event when one realizes that he (or she) understands a difficult concept and can use it in real life. Thanks to everyone that contributes to an atmosphere of respect for the academic process. It is a great gift and it costs nothing! Imagine that you can give your child a promising future simply be being available and supportive. Neat, huh? Well, please remember to check those Agendas and sign, sign, sign.
Until next week,

For the week of 2/25/08
With 27 days before the CRCT, things appear to be falling into place. Most students have a terrific attitude toward preparation for the "big assessment." Some, however, are not demonstrating an appropriate effort. Please encourage your child to become engaged in the process. My observation has been that all our teachers are devoting enormous amounts of time and effort to teaching those essential elements of the GPS in order for our students to experience success. All homework during this time is extremely important, so again, please monitor the Agenda for assignments and ensure that they are done carefully and thoughtfully. I do not believe that homework is given just to keep students "busy." Homework is a support to classroom learning and must be completed the night it is assigned. Some students need a little help, so please be available to answer their questions and provide the encouragement they need. We love our children! Their success is the most important part of our efforts. Thank you all for everything you do to make our labor effective.

For the week of 2/19/08:
This sounds like a broken record, but it is important that each of us bear in mind that the CRCT testing dates are perilously near: only 32 days left. This is a shortened week due to yesterday's holiday and we must use every instructional moment to its fullest. Please make sure that your child is reading their AR book every night. This will really help with the comprehension needed for the test. We are continuing to review L. Arts and will do so until April. Be certain to check the Agenda and see if there is homework. There is lots of reading happening also. Until next week, be blessed.

For the week of 2/11/08:
With only 37 days remaining until the CRCT, we continue to press toward the mark. Hopefully, we are remembering what lies behind. The Chattanooga Zoo will be here Thursday and we are requesting that students bring items one time to feed the animals on an ongoing basis. This is completely voluntary and will not prevent students from attending. Canned and dry pet food, dry cereal (a small baggie will be fine), etc. Not being current with the library will be cause to keep students from attending. If there are lost books or outstanding fines, those students will not be allowed to attend with their classmates. Please check with your child and ensure that all obligations are current. We will be out next Monday for President's Day. Please mark your calendars accordingly. Also, there will be a Valentine's Dance Thursday. Have a wonderful week and remember to keep checking and signing your child's Agenda.
In His Care,
Mick

For the week of 2/4/08:
There are only 42 instructional days left until the CRCT. I have noticed a drop in parent signatures in student Assignment Agendas. This has been accompanied by a drop in homework assignments completed and turned in when due. My homework policy is to assign homework only as a support to classroom learning. These assignments are not busy work or punishment. All homework assignments are designed to assist students in grasping and retaining those important points taught in class. The assignments are not lengthy or difficult, but must be completed when assigned to be effective. Additionally, at this time, all homework is assigned to assist students to prepare for the CRCT. It is my sincere goal that all students will not only "pass" the CRCT, but will "exceed expectations." This will happen only if we work together and each student knows that his/her parent is committed to the educational process (which includes homework). So, please ask to see your child's Agenda if they do not bring it to you as soon as they arrive home. If there are any problems or questions, please remember that you can phone me at the Academy (706/638-4155), or email me at mickrogers@walkerschools.org.
Thank you again for helping make this a great year!

For the week of 1/28/08:
Since there are only 47 days left until CRCT, be on the lookout for Homework assignments. I noticed that many parents are not signing Agendas and there were several students that did not complete homework last week. To be counted, a homework assignment must be completed and turned in on the due date. Otherwise, it is considered "not done" and the student has two days to turn it in for "late" credit. Since homework is crucial to reinforcing learning, it must be completed when assigned. Please inspect your child's Agenda nightly and check for homework. This cannot be done in the morning prior to leaving for school: it MUST be done the night of the assignment. Please help your child succeed. There is a limit to what a classroom teacher can do. We are a team and the CRCT is the Academic Super Bowl. We want every child to be a winner! Thanks for all you do!!

Welcome back after a much appreciated three-day weekend. CRCT preparation will continue and we will be visiting the library on Thursday. PLEASE remember to ask to see your child's Agenda (if it is not offered to you) and check for homework daily. By signing the Agenda, you are not "agreeing" to anything, just letting the teachers know that you have actually looked at it and that you are holding your child accountable to do all assigned work. Thank you all again for everything that you do to make this a great year for our children!

For the week of 1/14 through 1/21/08:
There are only 85 instructional days (55 until the CRCT) left in this school year. It is hard to imagine that the year has flown by so quickly. The CRCT is so important that we must invest a great deal of our effort in preparation. Fortunately, we began back in November introducing test-taking techniques and using practice tests to "warm up." We will continue with our basic plan of stressing reading, but there will be a much greater emphasis on language arts over the next three months. There will also be a lot more homework. PLEASE continue checking your child's Agenda to make sure that all homework assignments are completed when due. This is critical if we are to succeed. Thanks to all who have been so supportive thus far.
Be blessed,
Mick

For the weeks of 12/11/07 through 1/13/08
We are at the mid-point of our year. Soon everyone will be opening presents and spending time with family and friends. I hope that the "reason" for the season will not be lost in the busyness of the holiday. May we all pause and reflect upon the meaning of this holiday and how important each moment is.

I am pleased with our progress so far and foresee a fantastic second semester. Thanks again for all that you, as parents and guardians, do for our children. May your CHRISTmas be blessed.
See you next year,
Mick

For the week of 12/10/07
The Rewards reading program has started well. Students are enjoying the hands-on approach this strategy utilizes. CRCT preparation continues and students are gaining valuable experience that hopefully will lead to improved scores on the annual spring assessment. We continue with our individual AR reading program with 15 minutes (minimum) nightly reading required. If your student says, "I don't have any homework," please remind them of the reading requirement. If they have finished their AR book, then magazines, newspapers, or the Bible are acceptable substitutes. Thanks again to all parents for your support of teachers' efforts to improve "our" students' educational progress.

For the week of 12/3 - 12/9/07:
Looking ahead, these last weeks before CHRISTmas break will be busy. We have already begun preparation for the spring CRCT. Students are learning multiple test taking techniques that will assist them in increasing scores on the CRCT. We will be blending this instruction into our regular Reading/L. Arts instruction with heavy emphasis on the Georgia Performance Standards as they correlate to the annual test. We will be switching from SRA to Rewards reading program for Blocks 3 & 4. Block 5 will continue in the SRA program for a while longer. Please remind your child to observe proper hygiene habits to prevent colds, etc. This IS THE SEASON again and so far we have not had excessive illness. May everyone begin to experience the joy of the Christmas season.

For the weeks of 11/19 - 11/30/07:
Thanksgiving Holidays are upon us! After a short school week of only two days, we will be gathering in our homes to celebrate Thanksgiving. Each one of us is truly blessed, especially when we look at the circumstances of others. Let's remember this fact and pray for grateful hearts. May everyone enjoy the fellowship and food, and may we all return on the 26th to begin our sprint toward the finish line.
Be Blessed,

For the week of 11/11 - 11/18/07:
Welcome back after a three-day weekend. I hope everyone had a restful and fun weekend. We continue this shortened week with SRA for reading, a visit to the library on Thursday, and paragraph instruction for L. Arts. Remember we have our AR tests on Wednesday, so books must be completed by then. May the force be with us!!!

For the week of 11/5 - 11/11/07:
Hello again. The Book Fair was a huge success! Our heartfelt thanks to all parent volunteers that gave of their time and effort to assist Mrs. Cooper and our children.

We return to our regular library schedule this week with visits on Wed. for 2nd Block and Thurs. for the other Blocks. I trust that all children have been reading a nightly magazine article, Bible selection, etc. (it was in the Agenda) so that reading fluency can be maintained. SRA reading will continue and we will also be emphasizing sentence/paragraph construction as a part of our Writer's Workshop model.

The year is flying past with Thanksgiving Break in two weeks, Christmas in one month, and CRCT just around the corner. We have so much yet to accomplish. Please encourage your child to wash hands regularly, etc. to avoid illness. While we want our children to stay healthy because we love them, we also must bear in mind that a sick child is a child that cannot attend school and learn. Keep the faith, we are all in the same boat and have the same goal.
God Bless,
Mick

For the week of 10/29 - 11/4/07:
Grreatttt news! The annual Book Fair has arrived in our Media Center. Students will be able to attend on a scheduled basis to review and purchase books and other items. Parents, you are invited to drop by and preview the material also. That is the good news: the bad news is that we will not be able to visit the library as whole classes this week. Mrs. Cooper, our media center specialist, has offered to allow individual students to check out books on an individual, as-needed basis. Because Mrs. Cooper will be primarily occupied with overseeing the Book Fair activities, she will be hard pressed to accomodate individual student book check-in/check-outs. So, I ask every parent to understand and be patient. We will still require AR tests by Thursday, and there will be alternate reading resources (classroom library, newspaper and magazine articles, Bible readings, etc.) for our students to use. Please remember that nightly reading for 10 - 15 minutes is an ongoing homework assignment, even if the student does not have a library book for any reason. AR tests are recorded as a Major Assignment in students' grades. This quarter, the grade is derived at by averaging the Box Outline (graphic organizer) grade with the AR test grade to determine the recorded grade. This reflects how important the Box Outline is as a study guide for the AR test. It also provides a method for students to improve both their reading skills and grades. Please assist your child with both elements of AR, and help by requiring that your child does read every night. Again, thanks to everyone for continuing to make this a great year!!

For the week of 10/22 - 10/29/07:
For blocks 3 - 5 SRA reading continues. For 2nd block, we continue with Writer's Workshop as our main emphasis. In all blocks, though, reading is our primary concern and students have a standing assignment of reading their AR books 10 to 15 minutes (more if necessary to complete the book prior to testing) each night. We will visit the media center this week on Thursday, but because of the Book Fair, students will not be able to check out books as a class next week. Again, parents, please ask for your child's Agenda if they do not offer it to you. This is our main line of communication as well as your child's major assignment resource. Signing the Agenda does not necessarily indicate your agreement with the entries, but that you have read and understand what is required for that date, so please, "sign, sign, sign." You may also make any comments or inquiries and I will respond ASAP. Thank you again for your cooperation and assistance.
Best wishes for another great week!

For the week of 10/15 - 10/21/07:
Welcome back. I trust everyone had a restful and fun time away. Well, we are back and the adventure continues. We will be working on our reading program (SRA for most students) and having fun with Writer's Workshop. Our emphasis in W.W. this week will be writing correct sentences with a goal of organizing them into logical paragraphs over the following weeks. Blocks 3 - 5 will be visiting the media center on Thursday, so please remember to read library books each night. Block 2 will again be required to read five books this nine week period and all students that did not complete the nine book assignment last quarter must add the deficit to this grading period's requirement. So, if a student read only three books last quarter, he/she must read seven this term. The year is quickly proceeding and we have a great deal to accomplish, so please check your child's Agenda nightly and let's encourage all of our children to value the educational process.
Thanks again,
Mick

For the week of 10/8 - 10/14/07:
I want to wish everyone a blessed and deserved break in our school year. We will return on 10/15/07 with a renewed sense of purpose. Please remember that blocks 3 - 4 will be visiting the library on Thursday, so library books must be read by Wednesday, as we will be taking our AR tests that day. For my 2nd block students, a minimum of five books must be read each nine weeks. Grace was given for the first nine weeks, with only two books be required if the student agreed to make up the difference during the 2nd nine week grading period. That means if your child only read three books the 1st grading period, he/she must read seven this quarter. The total for the 1st semester must equal ten books. As always if you have any questions, please phone me at 706/638-4155 or email at mickrogers@walkerschools.org.
See you soon!

For the week of 10/1-10/7
This week we will be reviewing sentence types. We will also begin our study of paragraphs. Our SRA reading program will be continuing throughout the year, as will the AR program. Students will be going to the library on Monday and taking the AR test on Thursday this week. That means that nightly reading will have to be adjusted so that your child's book can be read by Thursday. If there are any conflicts, please contact me immediately so that other arrangements may be made.
May all be blessed,

For the week of 9/24-10/1/07
We will be reviewing Nouns and Verbs this week as well as writing sentences using these parts of speech properly. In addition, we are beginning our study of sentence types. Since Georgia Perforance Standards are a crucial part of our studies, we are learning how to use "Context Clues" to determine pronunciation and meaning of difficult words in sentences and passages. We began learning this strategy last week and judging from most students responses, this was a successful start. Please remember to sign your child's Agenda nightly. Sometimes our children forget to get their Agenda signed, so please ask to see it everyday. The Agenda is one of our most important tools for communication: you may write a note to any of your child's teachers, and we often write a quick note to you. Thank you for all that you do to help us make this a great year at our Academy!

For the week of 9/14 - 9/21: Blocks three through five will be visiting the library every Thursday now and all students will be required to read for 10 - 15 minutes each night. AR Tests will be given on Wednesdays. We are studying Verbs again this week. Watch for Language Arts homework assignments throughout the week. These will be recorded in your child's Agenda so you will know when they are assigned and due. The "definition" of doing homework is that it is completed at home and brought to class when it is due. If the assignment is not in class when required, it is considered "not done." Students will have the opportunity to turn in the assignment with a penalty for being late.
Thank you again for your help in making this a great year of learning for "our" children!!

Thank you for logging in and tracking your child's progress and assignments. I will leave the last entry from last school year posted for one month so that all parents can see what took place last year. We are about to begin a new adventure! Please encourage your child to remain engaged in the academic process. Also, please have your child read something everynight. It can be a newspaper, magazine, the Bible (hopefully this is happening anyway), or any other print medium. To assist in this effort, I have included Walker County's suggested Summer Reading Program for last year. Remember, you are the most important support a teacher can have. I wish to take this opportunity to thank each parent/guardian that will help us to have a successful school year. May God bless each and every one of you!!!

Summer Reading Program
2007-2008
Please take notice of the following information and try to implement the activities this summer. If you have questions or concerns, you may contact me at: mickrogers@walkerschools.org. The summer reading list includes a large number of titles, authors, and lexile reading levels. Students are responsible for reading two books and responding to them in one of the following ways.
• Book reviews written for each book read.
• A book cover created by the student to tell about the book’s contents, characters, setting, etc.
• A test created by the student.
• A song, poem or rap written by the student about the book read.
• A visual presentation such as a power point, poster, etc.
• Video or personal presentation such as a skit, book talk, or a radio broadcast about the book.
• A written or a video of a mock author interview by the student.
This list includes ideas for written as well as visual representations for a book that was read by the student. The response should be completed before the beginning of school and turned in during the first week. The reading response will be scored and a grade given.

Earlier this year ('06-'07), all Lafayette Middle School reading classes (6th through 8th grades) took an Accelerated Reader test on the previous "Read Aloud" novelette, Bird in a Cage. The results for all students in all Reading Classes were impressive, with most students doing quite well. For this test, the average for all of Mr. Rogers' 6th grade students was 88%. This is significant since that average is on par with the scores from all of the regular education reading classes and was higher than many. I am very proud of all of these students as they gave their individual best effort and the results give evidence of this fact. Another recent highlight was the performance of these same students on the '06/'07 CRCT. Of Mr. Rogers' 6th grade reading students, 81% "met or exceeded expectations" on the reading subtest. This is an incredible accomplishment, and ALL of the credit goes to the students who worked so very hard to prepare for the test. Again, I cannot say enough about the hearts of these special children. I have been truly blessed to share this year of their lives. I will always remember this year as the hallmark year of my teaching career!
I hope you have a terrific summer and you remember to include “reading” as one of your leisure activities.
Thanks again for a wonderful year,
