For the last week of school, we are planning to build our own geometrically correct kites as our final math project. I will provide the sticks and paper for the kites, but will need kids to bring in a roll of kite string for the project. An easy way to get kite string is to buy the $1 kite from the dollar store and just use that for this project. The students will bring back the string once we are finished. If we cannot collect enough kite string, then I will need to amend my plans for that final week. I have done this project before and the students have had great fun in designing and then flying their own kites. This also ties into the social studies curriculum where kite flying is an important cultural them in Afghanistan (The Kite Runner novel) and in Japanese culture.

You may have kite string in a junk drawer somewhere. Nothing fancy is required. If you have extra and would like to donate, we will certainly take it /images/emoticons/happy.gif

We have just finished the awesome math board games project. It will take me the rest of this week to get those graded and entered. We will have a fractions test next Wednesday of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. This ties into our rational numbers standard M7N1. We also will be working on another project as we are doing fractions where the students can express math ideas in a song, a skit or do role playing. It should be interesting and fun.

I have enjoyed working with your students this year. I am thankful for the opportunity to have done so. Please contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.

The last day of school is Friday, May 23rd.
