For the last week of school, we are planning to build our own geometrically correct kites as our final math project. I will provide the sticks and paper for the kites, but will need kids to bring in a roll of kite string for the project. An easy way to get kite string is to buy the $1 kite from the dollar store and just use that for this project. The students will bring back the string once we are finished. If we cannot collect enough kite string, then I will need to amend my plans for that final week. I have done this project before and the students have had great fun in designing and then flying their own kites. This also ties into the social studies curriculum where kite flying is an important cultural them in Afghanistan (The Kite Runner novel) and in Japanese culture.
You may have kite string in a junk drawer somewhere. Nothing fancy is required. If you have extra and would like to donate, we will certainly take it
We have just finished the awesome math board games project. It will take me the rest of this week to get those graded and entered. We will have a fractions test next Wednesday of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. This ties into our rational numbers standard M7N1. We also will be working on another project as we are doing fractions where the students can express math ideas in a song, a skit or do role playing. It should be interesting and fun.
I have enjoyed working with your students this year. I am thankful for the opportunity to have done so. Please contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.
The last day of school is Friday, May 23rd.

In Powerschool, your child may have the following codes as a grade.
nhi means that the assignment was "NOT HANDED IN" and a zero was assigned for the grade.
c is a completion grade and it is not a recorded grade. If it is not handed in, however, a zero will be assigned with a code of nhi
ex means that your child was exempt from an assignment and the grade is not affected. This may happen if there is an absence where an assignment cannot be made up.

I maintain a classroom website for my math classes. It is not something that all teachers have, but I have found it to be a great tool to help facilitate learning. There are many games links that will help you child strengthen their basic skills, such as multiplication facts.
Just cut and past the following link into the url box and it should take you right to it. I showed the website to all of the students on the Smart Board last week.

Students can view the television show NUMB3RS that airs on CBS on Fridays at
10pm. The show's entire theme is how math is used to solve FBI cases. Please
view this show with your student. It is a prime time television show and at
times the content might not ALWAYS be appropriate for middle school kids. Please view with your kids to ensure its appropriate content. I think
that the show does a good job of showing how mathematics carries over into
real life and is used beyond just what is done in a classroom.
For the extra credit, the student must complete the following:
WRITE A TWO PARAGRAPH SYNOPSIS OF THE NUMB3RS EPISODE
-Paragraph 1 should be focus on a brief account of the episode--like a short
summary
-Paragraph 2 must address how Charlie and Don used mathematics to solve the
problem in the episode.
Each paragraph will contain 4-5 complete sentences to receive full points
available for extra credit.
YOU MAY COMPLETE THIS TWICE IN the 1st 9 WEEKS!!!!
It will count as two extra credit test points or five extra credit quiz points.
*************EXTRA CREDIT IS RARE AND NOT ALWAYS AVAILABLE. IT WILL ALSO NOT BE ACCEPTED IF STUDENTS ARE NOT TURING IN MOST OF THEIR CLASS WORK*****************************
