Dianne Richardson's Weblog

There are many ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is best of all.
~Jacqueline Kennedy

Hey Everyone,

I apologize for not sending home or posting a newsletter this week. My computer's hard drive crashed! Mr. Lemons and Mr. Tipton have found one for me to use until mine is repaired. In the classroom, we are doing the best we can. We have come to rely on our Smart Board a little too much. But with the loaner, we are back up and running. I will resume our newsletters next week! Again, I apologize for the inconvenience.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Richardson

"I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. I will not refuse to do the something I can do." Helen Keller

Gilbert's Student Council has challenged our staff and students to perform "random acts of kindness". What is a random act of kindness? When we go beyond duties that are expected of us and reach out to help another person or group of people, we are performing a Random Act of Kindness. Kindness and empathy are very closely related: kindness is the observable expression of empathy. We sense another person’s need, we understand how it feels to be in need (due to our own past experience), and we decide to offer our help. This profound process can happen almost instantaneously, even if the person in need is a complete stranger. When we are kind, we express the best of our humanity.

I will be on the look out for random acts of kindness in our classroom. I will turn in a record of the RAK to the box outside Mr. Hayes' door. On Fridays, he will choose five of the RAKs to read on the news. Hopefully, our class will be recognized!

Gilbert's students are participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s 17th Annual Pennies for Patients® program, a community service project where students donate their spare change to fund blood cancer research and patient aid programs.

Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and high school students throughout the country. Everyone who participates is a winner!

Thanks to all of you who have sent in pennies this week. So far, we have $4.38. Keep up the good work!
