I recently learned about a piece of classroom management software called Moodle. This program allows teachers to create secure classroom environments online. Students can e-mail teachers and classmates, post their writing in blogs, discuss topics in online message boards, and utilize many other tools. Each child receives a unique username and password to ensure their safety. As a Moodle administrator, I can track, observe, and restrict anything students do within their “virtual class”.

If you want to see how your students can benefit from Moodle, please visit http://demo.moodle.org/. The directions on this site well help you login to a demonstration class. I would love to hear your thoughts and concerns about this valuable tool. You can e-mail me at curtishitchens@walkerschools.org.

The school has recently purchased some new computer software and hardware. Students can now use Type to Learn Jr. and Type to Learn Three to enhance their keyboarding skills. We also bought a copy of Apple Remote Desktop 3. This program allows me to control all the computers in the lab from a single computer. Mr. Phemister and Ms. Lambert recently received LCD projectors. These devices will be used during the workshops they conduct in our classrooms. The PTO bought one additional iMac for the computer lab. Thanks to everyone that made these purchases possible!

Are you interested in creating web pages and audio-only podcasts? If you don't have access to Apple's iLife applications, you should consider downloading Nvu and Audacity. These free programs make it simple to produce quality html documents and audio files. Nvu and Audacity can be found at these sites: http://www.nvu.com/index.php
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

When you download Audacity, be sure to grab a second file called Lame. This file helps Audacity export audio clips into the MP3 format.

Before school begins, a shared printer will be placed in the workroom. Any document not printed in your classroom should be sent to the workroom, not the computer lab or library. You can add this new printer to your laptop by reviewing my "Steps for Adding Shared Printers" blog entry.

We recently ordered two additional LCD projectors and five adapters that allow you to connect them to your Macbook. You can purchase an adapter of your own from the Apple Store online. As an educator, you receive a discount. The total purchase price for one adapter is slightly over $22.

These same steps can also be performed in iTunes to share your music with everyone.
