Students served in the Community Based Education classroom at LMS are actively involved in a functional curriculum which meets the needs of each student on an individual basis. Each student has an Individual Education Plan which is a collection of goals developed by the parent, student, administrator, teacher and any support services needed by the student. Support services include physical therapy, speech therapy, or occupational therapy. This plan becomes the 'curriculum' or educational road map for the student. The plan is reviewed by the team on an annual basis to determine goal mastery and develop goals at a higher level of achievement.
The typical areas of Math, English/Reading, Social Studies, and Science are addressed through more functional areas which include achievement in the following areas: adaptive living, vocational, communication, community access, functional math, functional academics, motor and personal care. Instruction in the classroom is generalized to the community through weekly community experiences. Focus during these outings may include, but not limited to, appropriate socialization in restaurants, retail stores and other public places; use of money, purchase of items, appropriate table manners, ordering meals and identification of community 'survival' signs.
