Thursday: page 53 15-20

This weeks homework is a practice of fraction operations. Remember to add and subtraction fractions and mixed numbers, you need a common denominator. Use their least common multiple to find it.
ex. 1 and 2/5 + 2 1/4 = 1 and 8/20 + 2 and 5/20 = 3 and 13/20. We change the denominator to 20 because 20 is the smallest number that both 5 and 4 go into. Once the denominators are the same, we can add the numerator, and then the whole numbers.

Also, to multiply fractions we multiply the numerators, and then multiply the denominators. Ex. 4/5 X 3/7 = 4X3 / 5X7 = 12/35. To multiply mixed numbers, make the mixed number an improper fraction, then multiply like above. Ex.
1 and 2/7 X 2 and 1/3 = 9/7 X 7/3 = 9X7 / 7X3 = 63/21 Then change back to a mixed number. 21 goes into 63 3 times. 3X21=63 so...63/21 = 3

To divide fractions, you multiply by the reciprocal. So 3/4 divided by 2/3 is the same as 3/4 X 3/2 = 9/8 or 1 and 1/8
To divide mixed numbers you must make an improper fraction as described above. 2 and 1/9 divided by 3/8 = 19/9 divided by 3/8 = 19/9 X 8/3 = 152/27. 27 goes into 152 5 times with 17 left over or 5 and 17/27.

Sorry about the homework from last week. I had some technical difficulties and could not post it.
Here is last week's homework in case your child missed it:
Monday:Lesson 5-8 page 42. Numbers 17-25
Tuesday: Lesson 5-9 page 43 Numbers 16-28 even
Wednesday: Lesson 5-9 page 43 Numbers 17-29 odd
Thursday: Lesson 6-3 page 47 Numbers 3, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12

Homework for this week:
Monday: Page 51 Numbers 6-8, 12-14, 18-20 Multiplying fractions
Tuesday: Page 51 Numbers 9-11, 15-17, 21-23, 27 Multiplying Fractions
Wednesday: Page 53 Numbers 6-14 Dividing Fractions
Thursday: Fraction Operation Review Sheet.

Notes to parents:
To multiply fractions you multiply the numerators to find the product numerator, and then multiply the factor denominators to find the product denominator
Example
3/4 X 3/5. 3x3=9 4x5=20 so...3/4 X 3/5 = 9/20

To divide fractions you multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
Example:
3/4 divided by 3/5 = 3/4 X 5/3 = 15/12 or 5/4 or 1 and 1/4

Monday: Finish fraction, decimal, percent, ratios sheet
Tuesday: None
Wednesday: Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators
Thursday: Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators

Reminders: Students need to keep up with the homework page from Monday. It will be used for the rest of the year

When completing the homework for Wednesday, we only add the numerators, not the denominators. Example 1/8 + 4/8 = 5/8

When completing the homework for Thursday, find a common denominator before you add.
1/4 + 1/8 4 and 8 have a LCM of 8 so change the 4ths to 8ths. 2/8 + 1/8 = 3/8

Friday is Halloween. Costumes are NOT allowed to be worn to school. If your child is attending the dance, they may bring their costume and then change that afternoon.

Monday: Equivalent Ratios 1-17 odd
Tuesday: Equivalent Ratios 2-18 even
Wednesday: Ratios 1-8
Thursday: Ratios 9-14

Notes to help:
Ratios are similar to fractions. We write ratios like fractions. Fractions are number representations that shows a comparison between the number of pieces and the number of pieces the whole is cut into. Ratios show a comparison of one sub group to another, or a subgroup to a whole. Each page contains a "help" sections that shows how to work out the problems given. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

Monday and Tuesday: NO HOMEWORK!!!!
Wednesday: Day 1 on class homework page.
Thursday: Day 2 on class homework page.

We are still working on ordering fractions, decimals, and percents. Here is some homework help for the page I assigned as homework on Wednesday and Thursday.

Day 1
1. Each whole inch has been split into 4 parts so the fraction we are looking for will be in fourths. Next, count the spaces between the points given. The number of spaces is equal to the number of fourth size pieces between the two points.
2. Each whole inch has been split into 4 parts.
3. Try 5/4 from both sides of point D. Which of those 2 points is 3/4 from C? Thats your answer.
4. G should be at 2 and 3/4

Day2
We will go over 1 and 2 in class (with a picture example)
3. Equivalent fractions: 1/2=2/4=3/6 1/3=2/6 2/3=4/6
