In this web-based module, American and Russian students will use the resources of the Internet and projects completed locally to find out about the quality of air in their environment. In the module you will monitor ground-level ozone and solid particulates, two pollutants that are responible for many health related diseases. You will also visit interesting sites on the Web, and use the project bulletin board and chat room to discuss your findings with each other.
Note: During the last week of the module, you should have the students develop a product such as poster, or a web page that summarizes their work and explains what they learned about air quality. You might also arrange with one of the partner schools to have an on-line chat.
Activities Web Reminders Particpate in the Web activities in Lesson 1. Post on the Eco-Connections
Project Forum your initial "theory" explaining
the greenhouse effect." Post a second "theory" explaining the greenhouse
effect but only after you have researched the web and discussed
the topic with your classmates and teachers. In Lesson 2 you will be using the Ecobadge to monitor
the air pollutant, ground-level ozone. You will also visit a number
of web sites to learn about ozone. Post your ground level ozone readings in the CLEO
data table. In Lesson 3, you will consider the issue of how
population size impacts air pollution. Be prepared during this lesson to visit the project
chat room to meet up with students across the world to discuss your
views on the relationship between population and pollution. In Lesson 4 you will find out how to measure one
type of indoor air pollution---solid particulates. You will also
visit several web sites to extend your understanding. Post your results from your investigation of indoor
air pollution on the project Eco-Connections
Project Forum. During this week, you should work to summarize
your research, and create posters or reports explaining what you
learned about air pollution.
