With the passage of IDEIA 2004, students who have been receiving special education services in another school district and enter Walker County with a CURRENT up-to-date IEP now must automatically enter into special education in Walker County. This change goes into effect July 1, 2005. * Be sure that the IEP is current and that you have a copy on hand. * Services are to be delivered right away, based on the current IEP from the previous school system. * If the current IEP appears to be appropriate for the new school and setting and can be implemented as written, it is not necessary to convene a meeting. * It is recommended that a signed permission to place be secured from the parent/guardian for services in Walker County. * If the current IEP appears to need revision or to be inappropriate for the new school or setting, then the special education teacher should set up an IEP meeting as soon as possible to amend the IEP. * If a student transfers to your school from out-of-system with an out-of-date IEP, contact the special education office or your diagnostician for guidance. Transfers from out of state-- Because eligibility requirements for services vary from state to state, an eligiblity determination for services in Georgia will be necessary. The appropriate staff at the Consultation/Evaluation Center should be notified regarding any out of state special education transfer student so that the process of eligibility determination can begin. While this process takes place, the student will continue to receive services based upon the current IEP. Transfers from within state-- The student has met Georgia eligibility guidelines so this process is not necessary. However, the Consultation/Evaluation staff must still be notified of these transfers so that eligibility timelines can be monitored. Transfers within Walker County School district-- Services continue as planned in the student's current individualized education program. School staff will request a meeting only if a change is needed.
