Additionally, individuals may contact the Walker County Department of Education at 706-638-7972 to inquire about home schooling. The following is a brief overview of the guidelines for home study programs. More detailed information is available at this web site, Home School . - Georgia law states that a parent or guardian must have a high school diploma or GED in order to home school his/her child.
- The home study program must include, but is not limited to, the subjects of reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
- The home study program must provide instruction for the equivalent of 180 school days and each day must be four and one-half hours long.
- Attendance records must be kept and submitted each month to the local school district.
- The home study program instructor must write an annual progress report for each student in the program. The report shall assess each student's academic progress.
- Home study programs are not accredited and high school students may not earn Carnegie unit credit toward graduation for home study courses. High school students enrolled in home study programs should consider earning a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
