ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a state funded instructional program for eligible English Language Learners (ELLS) in grades K-12. The program is designed to help these students develop and improve English proficiency. Instruction and additional support in the content areas, provided by various delivery models, helps to provide a language foundation for these students so that they are able to later participate independently in regular classroom instruction. Criteria for eligibility: The WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test (W-APT) is administered to students who meet the following criteria: 1. The first language is not English. 2. A language other than English is spoken in the home. 3. The language used most often is not English.
The score on the W-APT determines if a student qualifies for ESOL services. Between February \and March, all ELL students are administered the ACCESS test to determine their reading, writing, listening, and speaking proficiency growth and academic levels. A student’s score on the ACCESS determines continuation or termination of ESOL services.
