The U.S. Department of Agriculture presented Walker County Schools Food Services Division the Southeast Regional Best Practices Award for outstanding achievement in Promoting a Healthy School Environment for 2006-2007. The USDA Best Practices Award is earned for outstanding achievement in promoting a healthy school environment as determined by a selected panel of judges.
According to USDA studies, the American diet is not in balance. Most Americans do not eat enough vegetables, fruits, whole grains and low-fat milk products but eat too many fats and added sugars that contribute to obesity and diet-related diseases. The Pyramid Partner Program with schools was developed to help channel this information and assist Americans in making healthier food and physical activity choices.
Walker County Schools Food Services Division and Physical Education Departments readily adopted the program and continue to offer healthier choices and provide information to promote better health for families and their communities.
