Superintendent Melissa Mathis and School Board members Mike Carruth, Patty Hart, Susan Wells, Phyllis Hunter and Jim Smith congratulate LaFayette High’s Tara Tollett, center, as the 2007 Walker County Distinguished Teacher of the Year. Tara Tollett, Language Arts Instructor at LaFayette High, was chosen the Walker County Schools Distinguished Teacher of the Year. Candidates from each school, who were honored at a luncheon held by the Walker County Chamber of Commerce, wrote essays explaining their philosophy of teaching, were interviewed by a committee and were observed in the classroom. Tollett received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Georgia and began her teaching career at North Hall High before returning home to teach the last six years at LaFayette High. "I like spending each day with the kids," she said. "Teachers who are successful make children feel important and loved." Superintendent Melissa Mathis said, "It’s very gratifying as superintendent to know that those are the type of teachers that are out there every day modeling for other teachers, modeling for students and supporting our total instructional program."
