Tuesday, 22 April 2008
Walker County Partners for Educational Progress (WACOPEP) hosted the 18th Annual Walker County Superintendents' Banquet to honor the top ten percent of the Class of 2008.  Connect with Kids Network founder Stacey DeWitt was the keynote speaker for the gala event held at the Walker County Civic Center.

Sixty of the county's top academic students from Ridgeland, Gordon Lee and LaFayette High School were recognized for their academic achievement.  The high school principals introduced the students and their parents as Superintendent Melissa Mathis, Walker County Schools, and Superintendent Melody Day, Chickamauga City Schools, awarded each a certificate of achievement for their outstanding academic record in high school.

Principals also told the packed house the school or college each soon-to-be graduate plans to attend and the majors they have chosen.  Guest speaker Stacey DeWitt, from Atlanta, told the graduating students that this is their time to determine the course of their future and the kind of adults they will become.

Those of us who have spent years in education and witnessed many efforts for improvement and reform know the trend that urges education to be more like a business.
Educators are challenged to be cost conscious, customer minded, time efficient, task oriented, and product specific.  Time management is a huge factor.  Innovation and teamwork are also touted as essential.

The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) and the Walker County Chamber of Commerce announced and honored the 2008 Walker County STAR students and teachers at a luncheon attended by Chamber members and school administrators.

Aida Balthazor at LaFayette High and Hannah Ruth Pennington at Ridgeland were selected as STAR students for making the highest scores in one test administration of the three-part Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) taken through the December test date of their senior year in high school.  Balthazor and Pennington are also Honor Students in the top ten percent of their graduation classes.

Each year, STAR students are asked to select the one teacher most influential in their education careers.  Balthazor chose her Math teacher, Kathryn Parrish.  Pennington chose her history teacher, Randy Bandy.  All four were honored by the Chamber and the students received cash awards at the recognition luncheon.

Aida Balthazor was selected as district STAR Student and will represent Walker County Schools on the next level of competition in the region.

ImageTeams of medical professionals apply amazing, amped-up efforts in hospitals and emergency rooms every day to save lives and give patients a second chance to live successful and significant lives.  Likewise, we see the same urgency and effort daily in administrative offices and classrooms in Walker County.

Walker County Schools' mission is to prepare students for post-secondary experiences and to be workforce ready without the need for remediation.  As teams of professional educators, we are highly trained to intervene with amped-up strategies and to use our knowledge and skills to save our students from not achieving all that they possibly can and not moving into their lives capable of actualizing their dreams.

In "waiting rooms" throughout the system we find parents and community members anxiously awaiting the diagnosis, plan of treatment, names of suggested specialists, identification of tests and expectations for results for their "patients" (students).  With complete confidence that their students will remain healthy and thrive while safely in our care, families and communities send "patients" (Walker County students) to our "treatment centers" (schools).
